Dan´s father Niilo Kamunen was from Kalajoki, Ostrobothnia. Niilo was born in 1884 and died in 1956 in Sawyer, Minnesota. Dan´s mother Iida, née Sinkkonen, was born in 1895 in Joensuu, North Karelia, she died in 1961 in Duluth, Minnesota. Niilo and Iida met and got married in the USA.
Niilo emigrated to America in 1902. He came through Ellis Island to Minnesota to work as a miner. Eventually Niilo saved money to buy land and start a farm in Sawyer, Minnesota. Niilo and Iida got six children Eino, Raymond, Daniel, Lydia, Gertrude and Ida Rose.
Dan Kamunen´s worked 35 years at Conoco Marketing, it has taken his family around USA. Dan Kamunen was Finnish Honorary Consul in Colorado from 1988 to 2010. He has been a member of Finlandia Foundation since 1970. He and his wife Sonja are eager golfers.
