Eric Hanson Sitka 2009


8th Finglish trip May 2009 #7

Eric Hanson lives with his family on a boat in Sitka harbor in Alaska. His great grandparents came from Kuusamo, North Finland. Family was Apostolic Lutheran and had 21 children, they lived in Bruce Crossing, Michigan. Eric´s father studied at Michigan Tech in Houghton and moved to Seattle, Washington, to work at Boeing airplane factory. They had a house on Mercer Island in Seattle where Eric was born.

Eric and his wife Susan decided to sail from Seattle, Washington, to Sitka, Alaska. Sailing took three months. They planned to live in Sitka over the winter and fix the boat. They fell in love with Alaska and decided to stay there, eventually Eric and Susan got two boys, Chess and Morgan.

Eric Hanson has been an illustrator and writer for more than twenty years. His artwork has appeared in the New Yorker, McSweeney's, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, Spy, the Atlantic, Harper’s, the New York Times, Travel & Leisure, Gourmet, the Believer and other publications.
