Earl & Sylvia Seppala Hockessin 2007


5th Finglish trip July 2007 #27

Earl Seppala’s grandfather came from Kukkolankoski on the Tornio River in northern Finland to work in the mines of Michigan´s Copper Country. Seppala followed a career in engineering, and his hobbies include the Kalmar Nyckel, the Old Swedes Foundation and the National Guard. He has many relatives in Upper Michigan and in Finland. Sylvia's ancestors were Scots and Dakota nation.

The Kalmar Nyckel (Key of Kalmar) was a Dutch-built armed merchant ship. A replica of the Kalmar Nyckel ship takes passengers for cruises along the east coast of North America. The first Finns came to America from Sweden on the original Kalmar Nyckel to the colony of New Sweden in 1638.
