4th Finglish trip September 2006 #12

The Finnish American Home Association operates FAHA Manor, a affordable residence for seniors, and FAHA Palms, an equally sought-after cooperative residence for FAHA seniors, on the grounds of its complex in Sonoma, California.

FAHA's facilities include two living residences for seniors, a swimming pool, two authentic Finnish saunas, guest units, indoor meeting facilities, a reception hall, a commercial kitchen, and a well stocked library.

Jaakko Karkiainen was born in Viipuri, in the Finnish Karelia, in 1927. He recalls he was one of the last Viipuri inhabitants in 1944, who left the city on his bicycle, before Soviet troops invaded Viipuri.

In 1949 he moved to New York City to study at the university. Now he lives at the Finnish American Home Association complex in Sonoma California.
