In 1904 Andrew Lauri led the efford to gain autonomy to the area where first Finnish homesteaders had settled in 1889. Lauri wanted to name the new township Oulu in respect of his homeland region in Finland. Oulu is part of a larger farming area in Wisconsin that was called Väinönkontri. 40 % of the 500 plus population claim Finnish as their ancestry in Oulu Wisconsin.
'Working Bee Polka', 'Sydän Kohtaus' and 'Oulu Polka' are among the songs Bill Kangas and The Oulu Hotshots has recorded. The band used to play at the dances every Juhannus - Midsummer at the Mikkolas's Barn in Oulu Wisconsin.
